Fulton Muir received an honorary doctorate for his long service on the ANU Council. |
Mr Muir said the award, which recognised his 20 years of service to the University, came as a complete surprise.
“I’m overawed. I’m not an academic, but a figures man, an ex-banker. To be honoured in such a way is almost overwhelming.”
The former banker and financial advisor to governments said he had always been interested in education, starting out his career as a teacher in Victoria.
He said the University’s governing body was a valuable institution where personal differences were put aside for the good of ANU.
“In all the years I’ve been involved in Council, it’s varied in size, it’s had different percentages of males and females, but never in those 20 years has there been animosity. There has been vigorous debate, but never debate that would carry through into lunch or into personal relationships. It’s been very harmonious.”
Mr Muir joined the ANU Council in 1986. In 1989 he was appointed by Council to its Finance Committee and chaired the committee from 1993. He retired from both positions at the end of last month. He remains a director of ANU Enterprise.
