World stage for series editor

An ANU expert in world affairs has been named co-editor of the prestigious Cambridge Studies in International Relations book series.

Professor Chris Reus-Smit will co-edit a prestigious international relations book series.

Professor Chris Reus-Smit is taking over as series editor of the UK-based series, with Professor Nicholas Wheeler from the University of Wales at Aberystwyth.

Professor Reus-Smit, the Head of the Department of International Relations in the Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies, said that the Cambridge series is generally regarded as the premier book series in the field.

“Being appointed to the editorship is high recognition of the University’s standing in international relations, as we have one of the biggest concentrations of specialists in the world. We have some of leading specialists on international theory, international security, international political economy, and the changing nature of regional and global politics. The work of these scholars is internationally renowned, and being appointed to the Cambridge editorship is an indication of this recognition”.

As hundreds of proposals and manuscripts are received by the Cambridge series each year, Professor Reus-Smit acknowledged that the task for the new editors would be demanding.

“Thankfully, we will have the assistance of a large pool of peer reviewers and a strong international editorial board. The Commissioning Editor John Haslam is also one of the most highly regarded social science editors internationally.”

The Cambridge series publishes works from all parts of the field, from high theory to strongly empirical work. Professor Reus-Smit said that he and Professor Wheeler intended to continue with this broad publishing agenda, but hoped to seek out major works on cutting-edge issues.

Professor Reus-Smit’s appointment comes as the ANU is starting work on a new facility to house much of its expertise on international relations, diplomacy, strategic studies, and comparative politics. The new building is designed by Lyons Architects, who have just completed the new John Curtin School of Medical Research, and will be constructed on the corner of Garran Road and Liversidge Street.
