Partnership sets sights on autoimmune disease

Singapore’s technology agency A*STAR and the Australian Phenomics Facility (APF) at ANU have formed a new research partnership to focus on autoimmune diseases.

Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong witnessed the Research Collaboration Agreement (RCA) ceremony at the John Curtin School of Medical Research on 14 June. The RCA was signed by Associate Professor Lam Kong Peng, the Acting Director of A*STAR’s Biomedical Research Council, and Vice-Chancellor Professor Ian Chubb.

"This is an exciting opportunity to bring together world-class expertise in Singapore and Australia, and focus it on cutting-edge problems between immunology and genomics. The exchange of scientists and skills will deliver great synergies," APF Chief Scientific Officer Professor Chris Goodnow said.

Professor Goodnow, who won a Federation Fellowship last month to develop an international Immunity and Infection Genomics Consortium based at ANU, said the partnership with A*STAR would look closely at diseases like Type 1 Diabetes.

“The RCA will focus on understanding the causes and manifestations of autoimmune and immunopathological disorders. We’ll look at the functions of genes and proteins that are involved in immune tolerance, and how their dysfunctions could lead to the failure of an individual’s immune system to recognise its own cells, resulting in immune cells attacking the body’s organs and tissues.”

This RCA was developed following A*STAR Chairman Philip Yeo’s visit to the APF last July.
