First fellowship for ongoing service

Ian Grigg is the first recipient of the Honorary University Fellowship.

The chairman of the University’s Endowment for Excellence has been awarded the inaugural Honorary University Fellowship to recognise more than 15 years of service to ANU.

Ian Grigg received the award at a conferring of degrees ceremony in December.

The former senior public servant was previously the Chief Executive of the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries and is currently a Senior Adviser to the Board of Toyota Australia.

He was appointed to the University Council and the Finance Committee in 1988, and served on these and other bodies up until 2004.

In announcing the award, Vice-Chancellor Professor Ian Chubb said Mr Grigg had always weighed his decisions with great care.

“His consideration of the many issues that came before him has been marked by his thorough preparation for debate and by his readiness to ask the hard questions of those proposing courses of action,” Professor Chubb said.

Mr Grigg said while he was honoured to receive the fellowship, his drive to contribute to the University harks back to when he was a student at ANU.

“ANU gives its graduates, including myself, a kick start with a degree, so it's important that we give something back,” he said,

“I'm a firm believer that one shouldn't take the degree and run. Give something back, whether that's by making a contribution to the endowment, making yourself available for committee work, or just staying in touch.

“The University does benefit from outside expertise, whether that's financial advice, legal advice, or policy and management advice. It's great when some of that comes from alumni.”

Professor Geremie Barmé, Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies
