A new volume of the Australian Dictionary of Biography (ADB)
was launched in Melbourne this month, featuring an entry on

Awards
ANU has featured strongly in the Engineers Australia
National Engineering Excellence Awards picking up prizes
in two of the six National Awards categories. The Department
of Nuclear Physics won for its work on the LINAC Heavy Ion Accelerator,
and the Centre for Sustainable Energy Systems received a prize
for Sliver Sub-Module Assemblies, an engineering component of
the Sliver Cell Technology.
Professor Chris Reus-Smit has been awarded
a Fernand Braudel Senior Fellowship at the European University
Institute in Florence. Professor Reus-Smit, Head of the Department
of International Relations in the Research School of Asia and
the Pacific, will take up the Fellowship in the 2008/2009 European
academic year.
Dr Susan O’Connor and Professor
Alan Hajek have been elected Fellows of the Australian
Academy of Humanities. Dr O’Connor is Head of the Department
of Archaeology and Natural History and is currently conducting
a major archaeological research project in East Timor. Professor
Hajek is with the Research School of Social Science’s
Philosophy Program. His work is at the intersection of epistemology,
philosophy of science and probability theory. Fellows elected
to the Academy are residents of Australia who have achieved
the highest distinction in scholarship in the humanities.
Dr Colin Butler has been appointed to the
international organising committee for the United Nations Day
of Vesak celebrations 2008. Vesak (the full moon in May) is
the thrice holy day for the world’s estimated half a billion
Buddhists. It celebrates the birth, enlightenment and death
of the Buddha.
The Inaugural ANU Media Awards have recognised
the achievement of ANU Experts who regularly engage with local,
national and international media. The 2007 winners were:

Career advancement project
Opportunities for staff to expand their horizons were highlighted
at a recent completion ceremony for seven participants in the
CareerAdvance Program. The aim of the program is to provide
participants the opportunity to focus on their career through
a carefully planned and supported program that enables them
to access work placements or special projects on campus and
to undertake a structured training and development program.
Launch of ANU Poets Lunch Website
The ANU Emeritus Faculty has launched a website celebrating
more than 30 years of Poets Lunches. The lunches were a gathering
for ANU-based poets, who each composed a poem on a set theme
for the event. The website catalogues the full collections of
poetry and can be found at http://www.anu.edu.au/emeritus/poets/
The Advancement Project
Last year, ANU began planning a project to upgrade their current
version of software to the newly released version of Peoplesoft/Oracle
software applications that manage the University’s core
functions. These include finance, student administration, human
resources and payroll. Staff and students will be affected by
the upgrade through the use of the HORUS and ISIS systems. To

Movements
Professor Mick Dodson, Chair of Indigenous
Studies at ANU Faculty of Law, has been appointed as the new
co-chair of Reconciliation Australia. The appointment was announced
on Tuesday 27 November. Professor Dodson will lead the organisation
alongside co-chair, Melbourne lawyer Mark Leibler.
The Adviser to Staff, Heather McLeod, will
be Acting Manager of the University's Counselling Centre from
10 December 2007. She will be working out of the centre's office,
in building 18 on North Road until the end of March 2008 and
is contactable on 6125 2442. Counselling services for staff
will be referred where possible to Davidson Trahaire through
the Employee Assistance Program, as Heather will be limited
in taking work related counselling issues only until the staff
adviser position is filled. Staff can contact Davidson Trahaire
directly on 1300 360 364 for appointments which are at Deakin.

to cross for those at the beginning of their careers, but an
ANU scheme is helping make it easier for staff to experience

Satellites are now talking to the Faculty of Engineering and
Information Technology with the installation of a ground station
by undergraduate students. >>

Capturing the Year 2007: Selected writings from the ANU
College of Asia and the Pacific will be published and available
for sale throughout December. This collection captures aspects
of the year 2007 and of the talents and interests of the ANU
College of Asia and the Pacific. The College houses a remarkable
assembly of scholars and resources devoted to the study of Australia’s
neighbourhood from Afghanistan to the Pacific and of the global
context in which our region exists.
