Contract renewed with Finance to teach management courses
In line with the ANU’s goal to encourage interaction with
government departments, the ANU College of Business and Economics
has renewed its relationship with the Department of Finance
and Administration. The College recently signed a three-year
contract to offer postgraduate management courses leading to
a degree in management to Finance staff. The ANU/Department
of Finance and Administration program was originally initiated
through the National Graduate School of Management and has been
operating since 2004.

Awards
Professor Chennupati Jagadish from the Research
School of Physical Sciences and Engineering has been elected
a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of
Science. The AAAS is honouring the scientist for his “contributions
to the field of compound semiconductor optoelectronics and nanotechnology.”
Professor Jagadish is a Federation Fellow, and Head of the Semiconductor
Optoelectronics and Nanotechnology Group at RSPhysSE. He and
the other new AAAS Fellows will be acknowledged at a forum held
during the organisation’s annual meeting in Boston early
next year.
Phoebe Downing, a student in the College of
Arts and Social Sciences, has been awarded a scholarship by
HRH Crown Princess Mary of Denmark. Ms Downing is on exchange
at the University of Copenhagen studying art history and English.
The Crown Princess Mary Scholarship is funded for a five-year
period as part of the University of Copenhagen’s wedding
gift for the Crown Prince couple.
Fourth Year Bachelor of Actuarial Studies and Commerce student,
Gary Cheah is the successful recipient of the
Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) six week work experience scholarship
in London. RBS is sponsoring a new work experience scholarship
for one top Finance student of the ANU College of Business and
Economics to work in London over the Australian summer break.
Canberra Division 2007 Engineering Excellence Award
has been awarded to the Superconducting LINAC-booster for National
Heavy Ion Accelerator Facility Team of the Department of Nuclear
Physics. This award was presented at a special ceremony on 20
September 2007. The LINAC Team includes: Dr David Weisser, Dr
Nikolai Lobanov, Dr Tibor Kibedi, Dr Paul Davidson, Dr Gordon
Foote, Mr Alistair Muirhead, Mr Robert Turkentine, Mr Justin
Heighway, Mr Howard Wallace, Mr Alan Cooper, Mr John Bockwinkel,
Mr David Anderson and Mr Dennis Gibson.
Dr Howard Bradbury from the School of Botany
and Zoology has won the Jubilee Award from the Institution of
Chemical Engineers for his work to eliminate the poisonous cyanide
in cassava flour. The prize was announced recently in London.

2008 ANU Diary
The 2008 ANU Diary is currently in production and will be available
for purchase from late November this year. The diary will be
spiral bound with a recycled plastic cover and a layout with
a week over two pages. It will include useful ANU references,
acronyms, dates, a pull out year planner, map and contact numbers.
The diary will be for sale from Corporate Express (online),
the Coop bookshop and the Union shop for $15.00. ANU staff will
be advised as soon as they are available.
Vice-Chancellor’s Excellence Awards
These awards recognise and encourage excellence in both undergraduate
and postgraduate teaching, research supervision, general staff
contributions and excellent programs at the University. Note
that General Staff and Programs are 2 new areas this year. Students
and staff are invited to nominate now for the four awards for
Excellence in Education available in 2007: Citation for outstanding
contribution to student learning; award for program that enhances
learning; award for teaching excellence; award for excellence
in supervision. Each award carries prize money of $4,000. More

Smile of the Buddha: Image of Enlightenment
All staff and students are invited to view a new exhibition
at the Drill Hall Gallery that explores the richness and complexity
of past representations of the Buddha and the ongoing vitality
of Buddhism as it is manifested in the work of contemporary
Australian artists. For over 2000 years the Buddha’s image
has been a symbol of enlightenment and peace for millions of
people. Smile of the Buddha: Image of Enlightenment is at the
Drill Hall Gallery until 16 December.
