Encouraging science PhD students to forge more links with peers outside their research area was the goal of a end-of-year conference at the ANU College of Science.
Twenty-one doctoral researchers from across the College delivered oral presentations on their work, while other students displayed posters.
Organisers said one aim of the day-long event was to bring together students from the different areas of the college who otherwise wouldn’t have had many opportunities to interact. The conference also gave students vital experience in presenting their research and feedback was given to students on their presentation skills.
Alison Knight from the School of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology won the Centre for the Public Awareness of Science Prize for best presentation, while Glenn Bann from the School of Resources, Environment and Society (SRES) took out the Deans Prize for best scientific poster.
The ACT Chief Minister's Department Prize for best poster for a non-scientific audience was won by Matthew Brookhouse of SRES, while the Convener's Prize for outstanding services to the College was awarded to Amber Beavis from the School of Botany and Zoology.
