As the only Australian university established by an Act of the Commonwealth Parliament, ANU is also the only university to have its Annual Report tabled in the federal Parliament.
The 2007 Annual Report tabled last week demonstrated the University’s strong financial performance and continued performance in teaching and research.
The University's total income on a consolidated basis has grown from $755 million in 2006 to $797 million in 2007 and it posted an Operating Result of $96.561 million (2006 $101 million). Returns on the University's investment portfolio realised approximately $141.959 million, up from 106.212 million in 2006. The University retains a strong Balance Sheet with Net Assets totalling $1.9 billion, increasing by $92.043 million in 2007 largely due to the strong investment market.
ANU remained the top ranked university in Australia in 2007 according to the Times Higher Education Supplement, The Academic Rankings of Word University by the Shanghai Jiao Tong and the Melbourne Institution Ranking of Australian Universities (controlling for scope).
The University was also again placed in the top band for teaching excellence across its entire teaching portfolio in the Commonwealth's Learning and Teaching Performance Fund announced in October 2007. As a result, we will receive funding of $4 million in 2008, slightly up on 2007. Demand for undergraduate programs increased in 2008, with the total number of applicants, including international, nominating ANU as their first preference growing by more than 12 percent.
ANU won more than $38 million from the Australian Research Council for 78 new Discovery Projects, two Linkage Projects and four Linkage Infrastructure, Equipment and Facilities Proposals. More than $13 million in National Health and Medical Council grants were also awarded.
The ANU Annual Report is now available online at http://www.anu.edu.au/publications/content/annual_reports/
