Career Development Fair
As part of National Career Development Week (2-8 June 2008) the Staff Development Branch is coordinating a Career Development Fair for Staff. This free event will be held from 12-2pm on Wednesday 4 June in Melville Hall. A range of training and development providers from across the campus will be there. Staff will be able to speak to a career advisor, find out about training opportunities, ask questions about learning and development and have some complimentary lunch. 2008 Ally Program
All staff and students are invited to the launch of the 2008 Ally program at 6.30pm, Tuesday 3 June at Fenner Hall. The ANU Ally Network consists of a number of ANU staff and students who are informed about and sensitive towards gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex (GLBTI) people, and who are willing to support and affirm GLBTI people on campus and in the broader community. The launch will be a chance for interested people to find out more about Ally@ANU and for people who are already allies to meet and get involved in the 2008 program. Publication Subsidies
Applications are open for the Vice-Chancellor’s publication subsidies. These funds are allocated to assist the commercial publication of the results of academic research of staff members or students of the University that are unable to be published by an independent commercial publisher without financial assistance. Applications must relate to a completed piece of work conducted while at the University and negotiations with a commercial publisher must be at an advanced stage. The maximum amount for any one subsidy is usually $2,500. Applications are due by Tuesday 1 July 2008. More information is available online by visiting this link

Great Green Debate
Ways in which the business sector could help ensure a sustainable future for the planet will be thrashed out at the annual Great Green Debate at ANU on World Environment Day, 5 June 2008. A panel of experts from private industry, not-for-profit organisations and the University will have a robust discussion about how businesses could potentially help or hinder the environment. Doors will open at Bruce Hall on Daley Road at ANU at 7.30pm, with the panel starting at 8pm. There is no charge for the event and no RSVP is required. For Women in Science Fellowships
Applications are now open for the 2008 L’Oréal Australia For Women in Science Fellowships. The Fellowships recognise scientific excellence by early-career women in the life sciences, material sciences, physical sciences, mathematics or engineering, who have completed their PhD or equivalent in the last five years. They are intended to help early career women scientists to consolidate their careers and rise to leadership positions in science. Three Fellowships will be awarded, each for $20,000. The closing date for applications is Friday 20 June and more information is available at www.scienceinpublic.com/loreal

Awards

Reseachers at the Centre for Sustainable Energy Systems have won the DuPont Chairman’s Innovation Award for their Sliver Cell technology. Hailed as a breakthrough in solar technology, Sliver Cells could reduce photovoltaic module manufacturing costs by 60 per cent, providing an economical, environmentally sustainable, renewable energy technology.

Tom Griffiths has been awarded the Douglas Stewart Prize for non-fiction at the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards for his book Slicing the Silence: A Journey to Antarctica. In his acceptance speech, Tom said: “I hope my book retains that sense of wonder and innocence in the face of the continent of ice, because that is a good feeling to have. That is one of Antarctica’s services to humanity – to remind us of the boundaries of our own biology and to inspire awe and perhaps transcendence.”

Mace Neve from the John Curtin School of Medical Research has won an inaugural Quinn Honours Research Scholarship. Granted by the Medical Advances Without Animals Trust, this $10,000 prize is awarded to students undertaking honours research projects that do not use animals or animal products.

Kate Griffiths, a BhP student in biology, has won a Crown Princess Mary Scholarship to support her exchange study in Denmark. Kate received the prize from Princess Mary at the University of Copenhagen in May.

Dr Susan Howitt of the School of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BaMBi) is the recipient of the Australian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology’s Invitrogen Education Award for 2008.  The award rewards outstanding achievement in education in biochemistry or molecular biology, especially innovation and creativity in education.

A PhD student in BaMBi, Adele Lehane, has been awarded the Australian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology's 2008 Mannatech Award in Modern Metabolic Biochemistry. The Award is made for the most outstanding publication in the field by an early career researcher. Adele has also been awarded the Society’s President's Award Fellowship.

Movements

Penny Cox has been appointed as Communications Officer (Special Projects), a new position in the Communications and External Liaison Office. Penny has worked at the University for eight years, most recently as Events & Marketing Officer in the Marketing and Communications Division where she coordinated the public lecture series.

Bill Speed has been re-elected as the general staff representative to the University Council. Bill is the Maintenance Manager at the Mechanical Workshop in the Research School of Biological Sciences. It is his third year in the position.

Richard Rigby has been appointed as the inaugural Executive Director of the new China Insitute in the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific. Richard is an ANU alumnus who worked for the Department of Foreign Affairs until 2001. He joins ANU from the Office of National Assessments where he was Assistant Director-General responsible for North and South Asia.
