Journalists join the student body

Journalists from the press gallery and around the country temporarily joined the student body this month during a Winter School on business and economics.

The twelve journalists met with academics in the areas of business, finance and economics to learn more about ANU research, and to develop contacts with experts for the future.

The program was organised by the Communications and External Liaison Office (CELO) and followed a Summer School held in December 2007 for science and technology writers.

“These programs provide great benefits for the participants on both sides,” CELO Director Jane O’Dwyer said. “The journalists get story ideas and develop their contacts and the academics get to share their ideas and feel more comfortable talking to reporters in an informal setting.”

When Josh Robertson of The Courier-Mail in Brisbane was approached about the Winter School he jumped at the opportunity. “ANU is a great institution and it’s been really beneficial to get out of the office and meet the experts face to face,” Josh said. “The presenters have given us some good insight into subjects we usually only gloss over.”

Presenters at the Winter School included Professor Raghbendra Jha on the rise of the Indian economy, Mark Wilson on the creative accounting practices of Tooth & Co. Ltd and Professor Warwick McKibbin on the economics of climate change policy.
