ANU Poll takes national snapshot
A new quarterly poll run by ANU will gauge Australian attitudes to major issues and place them in a policy-based international context. >>

Building skills for Afghan officials
Thirteen officials from a range of ministries in Afghanistan took part in a training program run by the Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies and the Asia-Pacific College of Diplomacy at ANU, with funding from AusAID. >>

Percussion festival goes off with a bang
The rhythmic pulse could be felt over the campus. It wasn’t the sound of construction or a plane flying overhead – this blast was created by more than 120 budding musicians banging in unison in what is known as a drumming circle. >>

Graduate Studies Information Evening
The Student Recruitment Office is holding a Graduate Studies Information Evening on 13 May from 5pm at University House. The evening will allow prospective graduate students to find out about ANU and the graduate coursework and research programs on hand. All seven colleges will be represented and attendees will also be able to gain an understanding of what it takes to be a graduate student at ANU with information available on fees, administration processes, study abroad opportunities and much more. Staff Development
The Human Resources Division Staff Development Calendar for 2008 is now online. Courses are available for academic and general staff at all levels and most are offered free of charge. Salary packaging at ANU demystified
A number of staff raised the issue of extending salary-packaging arrangements in recent meetings held by Deans and Directors on the new Enterprise Agreement. It is clear there is some uncertainty about the rules for salary packaging at ANU and what the ATO Fringe benefits tax rules allow. >>

Cafe redevelopment
The Cellar Cafe at University House is closed for renovations until September. There is currently a temporary facility in Fellows Garden where guests and staff can purchase food and drinks.

2009 Fulbright Symposium
The Australian-American Fulbright Commission annually offers a grant of $30,000 to a university, group, or individual to host the Fulbright Symposium. The Symposium focuses on a topic of current bi-national interest between Australia and the United States and engages leading speakers from both countries. The grant is awarded following a national competition with proposals assessed on criteria including a topic of bi-national significance, defined outcomes and benefits, and the wider professional and institutional interest and support. If you find that low mood, stress or isolation impacts on your studies, take a step in the right direction this semester. ANU Hosts Two of Australia’s Premier Researchers
A political scientist and a mathematician have been named as two of the latest Federation Fellowship recipients by the Australian Research Council. >>

ANU Team in Peak Time Student Business Competition
An ANU team has been selected for the grand final of the Peak Time 2008 International Student Business Competition in Riga, Latvia. The competition is the biggest international business competition in Eastern Europe involving participants from all over the world. Its aim is to provide business students from the world's top universities with an opportunity to test and apply their skills and theoretical knowledge by solving realistic assignments, including entrepreneurial case studies and real business simulation exercises.

Vice-Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence
Experts in the natural sciences feature largely in Vice Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence for 2007. Teaching awards will go to Dr Patricia Backwell from BoZo, Dr Janette Lindesay from the Fenner School, and Dr George Quinn from the Faculty of Asian Studies. The award for research supervision will go to Professor Kiaran Kirk at BAMBI. The citation award will go to Dr Megan Poore from the Academic Skills and Learning Centre.

Christine Keller Smith, the ANU Alumni Relations Director, has been appointed to the US-based CASE Commission on Alumni Relations. The Council for Advancement and Support of Education is the professional organisation for education advancement professionals working in alumni relations, communications, fundraising and marketing.
