Building skills for Afghan officials

Thirteen officials from a range of ministries in Afghanistan took part in a training program run by the Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies and the Asia-Pacific College of Diplomacy at ANU, with funding from AusAID.

Instigated by Professor Amin Saikal with Professor William Maley, the program also focussed on the ways Australia is providing help to solve security and governance problems in Afghanistan.

Subjects covered in the program included world politics, Afghanistan's place in international affairs, trade, and ways to rebuild disrupted states and government institutions.

The organisers of the training program said the Afghan officials will return to their nation with a better understanding of reconstruction and Australia's experiences in assisting troubled states after a period of intensive learning at ANU. It is hoped they will be better leaders within their departments when they return to Kabul.

ANU will run follow-up training for the cohort of officials in Afghanistan at a later date.
