Graduate Studies Information Evening
The Student Recruitment Office is holding a Graduate Studies Information Evening on 13 May from 5pm at University House. The evening will allow prospective graduate students to find out about ANU and the graduate coursework and research programs on hand. All seven colleges will be represented and attendees will also be able to gain an understanding of what it takes to be a graduate student at ANU with information available on fees, administration processes, study abroad opportunities and much more. Seeking Homestay Hosts
ANU College (ANUC) is offering ANU staff and their families the opportunity to interact with students from a different culture and assist them to experience and enjoy the Australian way of life by becoming paid Homestay hosts. The Homestay program is for international students studying at ANUC, the English and academic pathway provider for the University. Hosts are required to provide students with three meals per day and their own room, complete with bed, desk chair and lamp. The current rate of payment for hosting a student is $240 per week for students over 18 and $260 per week for guardianship (under 18) students. ANUC is also seeking hosts who allow students to prepare their own meals under a program that pays a weekly room only rate of $150. Staff, or their friends and family, are invited to contact Homestay Coordinator Sherry Sjolander for an information kit and application form on 6125 5663 or sherry.sjolander@anucollege.com.au

Forum for Research on Ageing & Longevity
The ANU stream of the ARC/NHMRC Research Network in Ageing Well is sponsoring a Forum for Research on Ageing and Longevity at ANU on Thursday 24 April in the Finkel Lecture Theatre, JCSMR. Presentations will provide overviews of research areas at the ANU and posters will present specific research projects. The event is fully catered with a poster session running concurrently through lunch.
Abstract submissions for poster presentations are still open. Please submit a title and 150-200 word abstract by emailing Lauren Bartsch by Tuesday 15 April for inclusion in the program.

Awards

More than 30 ANU staff and students have been invited to attend the Federal Government’s 2020 Summit on 19 and 20 April. The University is represented in nine out of the ten categories being discussed. The full list of participants is available at http://www.australia2020.gov.au/news/20080329_particpant.cfm

The Vice-Chancellor’s awards for excellence in education have been announced. Teaching awards have been given to Dr Patricia Blackwell (BoZo), Dr Janette Lindesay (Fenner School) and Dr George Quinn (Southeast Asia Centre). Professor Kiaran Kirk from BaMBi has received an award for supervision and Dr Megan Poore from the Academic Skills & Learning Centre has been recognised with a Citation Award.

Two ANU students have been awarded the Borrie Prize for the best student paper on a population-related topic. The prize is named for Professor W.D. Borrie (1913-2000), Australia's first full-time academic researcher in demography, and is awarded each year by the Australian Population Association. Madeleine Rowland won in the undergraduate category and Brian Opeskin in the postgraduate category. Both wrote their papers for courses taught by staff in the Australian Demographic and Social Research Institute (ADSRI).

Associate Dean of the ANU College of Law Professor Stephen Bottomley has won an international prize for his book The Constitutional Corporation. Stephen has been awarded the Hart Socio-Legal Book Prize for 2008 for the most outstanding piece of legal scholarship published in the past year. The prize was announced at the Socio-Legal Studies Association annual conference in Manchester, UK.

Professor Brian Schmidt of the Research School of Astronomy & Astrophysics has been recognised as one of the ten most pre-eminent researchers working in Australia by Thomson Scientific. The organisation provides information solutions that assist professionals at every stage of research and development and presented the awards based on the average number of citations per paper an academic’s research has over a period of time.

Movements

Ms Sindia Sosdian of Rutgers University will be joining ANU as a Sir Keith Murdoch Fellow through the American Australian Association. Sindia's research concentrates on paleo-climatology, paleo-oceanography and oceanography. Her research at ANU will investigate the fundamental controls on Australian rainfall by reconstructing changes in sea surface temperatures and rainfall across the last 7,000 years.
