Career Development Fair
The Staff Development Branch of the HR Division hosted a Career Development Fair for Staff on Wednesday 4 June in Melville Hall. Training and development providers from across the campus worked together, representing their areas with information stalls. HR Director, Ron Watts opened the event, which was attended by more than 300 ANU staff. Many visitors commented that the event was a great opportunity to find out what services are on offer across the campus. A very big thank you to all staff who supported the event. Congratulations to the lucky door prize winners: Patricia Oxborrow, Wendy Fox, Tom Hammond, Chihyon Meneses, Jan Grubb, Katarina Heineback; Ian McMahon, Sarah Lethbridge, Kate McKenzie and Kate Taggart.

Policy Review Dialogue

The Research and Innovation Policy Project (RIPP) encourages ANU staff to engage in the policy review dialogue, by contributing articles or discussion papers, references and further readings, opinions and comments, which will be posted on the policy dialogue website, for public view and discussion. These can be contributed anonymously if that is preferable. 

ANU staff are also entitled to attend any of the RIPP open workshops free of charge.

Fees
Students will be able to pay for their bricks at the Manning Clark Centre from Thursday the 17 July to the 1 August 2008 inclusive.  Opening hours will be from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm each day except weekends and public holidays. Semester two fees will be run over the weekend of the 27 June and invoices will be emailed after the 7 July to the students email account.  Semester fees will be due by the 8 August 2008.

Awards

Three ANU staff have been nominated as Fresh Scientists. Fresh Science is a national competition that identifies new and interesting research being done by early-career scientists around the country and is run in association with National Science Week. They are Christopher Fulton of the School of Botany and Zoology, Maarten Kole of the John Curtin School of Medical Research and Nick Robins of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Quantum Atom Optics.

Renata Ram has been selected as the 2008 IELTS Australia Peace Scholarship Program Student of the Year. Renata is a Peace Scholarship Recipient from Fiji, who is studying Public Health at ANU for one semester, co-sponsored by UNIFEM Australia. The Peace Scholarship Program was designed to help build global peace and understanding and operates on the principle that providing opportunities to students to study abroad promotes the interaction of diverse cultures through, improves cross-cultural understanding, leading to enduring global peace.  

Three ANU students have been awarded Gates Cambridge Scholarships. Niraj Lal, Anna Gordon and Ramona Meyricke will receive full-cost awards for graduate study and research in any subject available at the University of Cambridge. The scholarships are highly competitive and are awarded to citizens of any country outside of the United Kingdom on the basis of the candidate's academic excellence, a good fit between the Scholar and the University of Cambridge, evidence of leadership potential and a commitment to improving the lives of others. Jeffrey Lai has been elected to the World Council of Student Members for the Golden Key Honours Society. Jeffrey represents Golden Key chapters throughout Australia, New Zealand and Malaysia. He was the 2007 Tillyard and General Sir John Monash recipient and is currently studying in the ANU Medical School.

Professor Jane Stapleton of the ANU College of Law has been awarded the degree of Doctor of Civil Law (DCL) by the University of Oxford. The DCL is one of the the ancient 'senior' doctorates. It is awarded for published work 'consisting of an original contribution to the advancement of knowledge of such substance and distinction as to give the candidate authoritative status in some branch or branches of legal learning'. Jane is a Statutory Visiting Professor at Oxford.

Professor Will Steffen has stepped down as Director of the Fenner School of Environment and Society. He will take up a new position as Director of the ANU Climate Institute shortly.
