"Techné" a survey of contemporary Australian new media art, and "Late 19th and early 20th century prints from Germany: Lierbermann, Slevogt and Corinth" an exhibition of three distinguished German artists, opened at the Drill Hall Gallery on August 20. The Australian National University Choral Society will be performing "Vespers", Rachmaninoff's work for unaccompanied choir on August 29 at 8pm. The performance will be held in the dining hall of the Canberra Boys Grammar School. For tickets, adults $15, concession $9, ring 6247 9831.
The Urban Research Program will hold two seminars. The first titled "Reflexive modernisation and the city" will be given by Brendan Gleeson on August 31. The second titled "The environmental aesthetic" will be given by Tim Bonyhady on September 7. Both seminars will be held in seminar room D of the Coombs Building at 11am. Professor Chris Heyde, of the School of Mathematical Sciences, was awarded an Honorary DSc Degree by the University of Sydney on May15, in recognition of his distinguished contributions to probability and mathematical statistics and to the Statistical Society of Australia. Abbie Angharad Hughes, Visiting Fellow at the Optical Sciences Centre, Research School of Physical Sciences and Engineering, was appointed to Fellowship of the National Vision Research Institute at its Twenty Fifth Anniversary Meeting. Abbie Hughes is emeritus Foundation-Professor/Director of the Institute, and affiliate of the University of Melbourne. Mr Jeff Townsend, appointed to Council by the Chief Minister of the ACT, has resigned. Mr Peter Chen has been appointed President of the Postgraduate and Research Students Association (PARSA) until September 18 during Mr Quiton Clements' absence on fieldwork overseas. Mr Chen will represent PARSA on Council. Miss Pauline Griffin, ANU's Pro-Chancellor, has been elected an Honorary
