Council gives medals for General Staff excellence
The ANU Council has approved five recipients of the 1998 Council Medals for General Staff Excellence. Ms Pam Bleakley, Operations Officer, The John Curtin School of Medical Research; Ms Julie Gorrell, Executive and Liaison Officer, Humanities Research Centre; Ms Jennifer Hunt, Departmental Administrator, Statistics and Econometrics, Faculty of Economics and Commerce; Ms Beverley King, Administrative Assistant, Faculty of Law and Mr Paul Walsh, Senior Technical Officer, Aerophysics and Laser Diagnostics Group, Faculty of Science, will receive their medals at the October 2 Conferring of Degrees ceremony. Vice-Chancellor, Professor Deane Terrell, told Council that the selection panel had recorded its difficulty in selecting five nominees from the very strong field of 20 candidates. The panel noted all nominees "had clearly brought great credit on general staff as a group and had the capacity to be worthy models for general staff colleagues". The selection panel said nominations of women staff members had risen
from 25 per cent of all nominees in 1996 (the first year of the award) to
55 per cent this year. Nominations had evened out over all areas of the
university, with the 25 per cent from the Institute of Advanced Studies
this year (compared with 65 per cent in 1996); 30 per cent from the Faculties
(15 per cent); 5 per cent from the Institute of the Arts (none in 1996)
and 40 per cent form other areas (20 per cent).
