RSSS library renamed to honour Caldwell

The Demography Library in the Research School of Social Sciences was officially renamed and reopened as the Caldwell Library on Thursday, July 30 at a function attended by about 100 guests.

Professor Jack Caldwell was head of the Department of Demography from 1970 to 1988.

Professor Caldwell said he valued his continuing association with the Research School of Social Science's Demography Program and believed it was a program that had brought distinction to the ANU.

"It was one of the great demography programs of the world, and one that fitted in particularly well with an Institute of Advanced Studies," he said. "It was an important element in giving a distinctive and respected character to the Research School of Social Sciences and, internationally, when the School was mentioned, first reference was often to its demographic research."

The library has been part of the Demography Program since the late 1950s or early 1960s, originally holding statistical material and some of the demographic classics. The collection now focuses on journals, statistical publications and working papers from over 60 other population research centres across the world.

Substantial changes have been made to the library in the past year, including electronic storage and management of its records.
