New DVC named
The ANU has appointed Professor John Richards, Rector of University College, Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA), The University of New South Wales, as the new Deputy Vice-Chancellor. Prof Richards' appointment was approved by Council on Friday and he will join the ANU in September/October this year. Vice-Chancellor Professor Deane Terrell, said the University was gaining a distinguished academic and administrator to take on the pivotal role of Deputy Vice-Chancellor. Prof Terrell said Prof Richards' experience in industrial relations, especially enterprise bargaining, would strengthen ANU's approaches to these areas. Professor Richards, a leading researcher in the field of remote sensing, has a Bachelor of Engineering, with First Class Honours, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of NSW - both in Electrical Engineering. He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, a Fellow of the Institution of Radio & Electronics Engineers of Australia, a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Australia and a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineers, Inc. New York. In 1996, Prof Richards was appointed Rector of University College, ADFA.
Events A public lecture will be given by Ambassador Richard Butler AO, executive chairman of the United Nations Special commission, titled "Can the Security Council enforce international law?" An exhibition at the ANU Drill Hall Gallery from June 6 June 14 will feature works of Zao Bi, head of the Department of Fine Art, National Institute of the Arts, Taipei. Mr Bi has been invited to work in Australia as the first representative of Taiwan under an exchange program supported by the Australia Council.
The next University House "Books in My Life" series will be given by Sir Anthony Mason, former Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia and Chancellor of the University of New South Wales, on July 8. House dinner begins at 6pm with the speech at 7.45pm. Dinner costs $20. Bookings to Lynn North on 6249 5271.
The Drill Hall Gallery will be holding an exhibition of contemporary Australian textiles titled "Fibre Imprints", from June 20 July 12. Inquiries to Karen Hall on 6249 5832.
Information about the 1998 Annual Alumni Appeal has been mailed to all
members of Convocation. This year the top priority is to raise funds for
student scholarships. Funds raised for scholarships will be matched by a
contribution from the ANU's Endowment for Excellence. If you would like
