Headed for sale: Executive Officer, Development, Bruno Yvanovich, with the bust of Nugget Coombs to be auctioned on June 30 |
Organisers of an auction to raise funds for the ANU's Nugget Coombs Scholarships have had to change their plans following an unexpectedly large response to calls for donated items to go under the hammer. A charity dinner and auction had been planned for May 30 but Executive Officer, Development, Bruno Yvanovich, said the function will now be held as an auction only on June 30. The auction will be at the University's Drill Hall Gallery in Kingsley St . ANU Vice-Chancellor Professor Deane Terrell said that Nugget's lifelong commitment to the cause of social justice for Australia's indigenous people seemed to have struck a chord in the hearts of many. "Many prominent artists have responded with great generosity to our endeavour to raise funds for scholarships which recognise Nugget Coombs' contributions to indigenous Australians," he said. Items for auction include Judith Wright McKinney's Encyclopedia Britannica Literary Medal; a bust of Nugget Coombs by Lawrence Beck (pictured) donated by the Coombs family and a print by Sydney artist and Archibald Prize winner, Judy Cassab. The Drill Hall Gallery will be displaying all items in the lead up to
the auction. | |
