Hall students' hands-on aid | |
ANU student Bruno Aloisi hadn't considered a career in disability services until he started volunteering for Fenner Hall's Turner Primary Programme. Fenner's Teachers Aid program gave Bruno the chance to work with disabled students at the Turner Primary School. The experience has sparked his interest and he is now enrolled in an ANU Master degree program in Clinical Psychology. Bruno said volunteering provides students interested in teaching and clinical psychology valuable experience as well as the satisfaction of helping others. He is one of many ANU students who are volunteering their time on charitable projects set up by ANU's halls and colleges. In addition to the Turner Primary School project, which engages about 40 residents each year, Fenner Hall also organises students to collect donations for the Red Shield Appeal and financially support a child in Nepal. Other colleges and halls, including John XXIII,Ursula, Burgmann, Bruce and Burton and Garran, also sponsor poor children from developing countries in Africa and South America. Kate Hayes, Head of Fenner Hall, has initiated many of the volunteer programs with students at Fenner Hall. "I felt we were very fortunate and blessed ourselves and that we
should do something for our neighbourhood community," said Ms Hayes.
