By Lynn Bloomfield and Jason Harper* University students may not be widely recognised as voluntary workers in the community but one group of ANU students is doing its best to change that. The ANU Chapter of the Golden Key National Honour Society is part of an international organisation dedicated to local community work. Since its inception in 1995, the chapter has introduced a range of activities affecting students, faculties and the general public. Many of these activities are run with the cooperation of the ANU administration, while Golden Key members volunteer their time and expertise to organise events or just supply the necessary personnel. One of the chapter's main activities is the Voluntary Tutoring for Students with Disabilities Program run with the aid of the ANU Disabilities Officer. Through this program, disabled students who require tutoring in any subject are paired up with Golden Key members with relevent expertise who give an hour of their time each week. In a more visible role, 20 members volunteer each year to act as guides for the ANU's Open Day. Members also act as guides for touring school groups and visit local schools to promote the ANU. Golden Key members are also involved in many community-based events. Each year members help to tidy the campus as part of Clean Up Australia Day. Members also join the annual nationwide "Plant-a-Tree with Golden Key" program under which each Chapter, with the help of local Greening Australia representatives, aims to revegetate an area of degraded land by planting a variety of native species of trees and shrubs. *Lynn Bloomfield and Jason Harper are members of the ANU Chapter of Golden
