Geochron's predecessors have vanished with time | |
It was interesting to see the "geochron" (ANU Reporter, March 11). Whatever happened to the wonderful sidereal clock that used to occupy a metre of wall space in Mt Stromlo and showed times in cities all over the world (not digital) as well as some star features I'm now hazy about? Made of brass (I think) it was used to keep Greenwich mean time and make accurate the "pips" on ABC Radio. They had one in the astronomy department of Northwestern University, but it has also disappeared. As this equipment looked exciting to an eight year old Mt Stromlo child (1952), I found it mind opening and deemed myself extremely fortunate to be born to an astronomer and an archaeologist, and blessed to have three childhood years "on the mountain".
