The autumn Conferring of Degrees ceremonies saw a total of 1177 graduands receive their degrees from Chancellor Professor Peter Baume in Llewellyn Hall, Canberra School of Music, last week. It was the ANU's largest science conferring - with over 371 graduands receiving their degrees. Mr Ian Grigg, the Prime Minister's Special Automotive Envoy, was the guest speaker who addressed graduands of Economics and Commerce and the Research School of Social Sciences. Ms Pru Goward, First Assistant Secretary of the Office of the Status of Women in The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet was the guest speaker at the conferring for the Faculties of Asian Studies and Law and the Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies.On Friday, Dr Malcolm McIntosh, Chief Executive of CSIRO addressed graduands from the Faculties of Engineering and Information Technology and Science and the Science Research Schools. Dr W Jonas, Director of the National Museum addressed graduands of the Faculty of Arts.
Advice that the European white poplars in Union Court have reached the end of their safe life has bought forward the date for redevelopment of the area, Facilites and Services director Warwick Williams said..The trees are expected to be removed by May. The redevelopment of the Court has been planned to improve the area's function as heart and commercial centre of the university. Consultation about the redevelopment will be held, he said.
Three ANU professors have been selected to attend the AV-CC Senior Leadership Program in Penang this month. They are Professors Michael Coper, of the Faculty of Law; Ian McAllister, of the Research School of Social Sciences; and John Hearn, of the Research School of Biological Sciences. The program's theme is: "Internationalisation/ Globalisation/ Asianisation? Rethinking the context and practices of Australian universities' engagement in Asia" and will be held at Kolej Antarabangsa International College in Penang. The objectives of the program include challenging assumptions on the globalisation of education, building national and international networks, and developing strategies for managing change in global education.
