The Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) prepared for the Federal Government on the proposed Jabiluka uranium mine in the Northern Territory will undergo a peer review, led by a geomorphologist at the ANU. The EIS was reviewed by Environment Australia but Professor Bob Wasson, of the Department of Geography in the Faculties, said it should undergo the rigorous peer review which is the norm in the scientific community.

 

A text retrieval system developed by Mr Dave Hawking and colleagues from the Cooperative Research Centre for Advanced Computational Systems at the ANU won first place in a major category at the sixth Text Retrieval Conference in Washington late last year. The annual conference is organised by the United States' National Institute of Standards and Technology.

 

The CD-Rom "Learning Thai Script" produced by the Multimedia Interactive Learning Laboratory (The MILL), and the National Thai Studies Centre in the Faculty of Asian Studies at The Australian National University, was recently awarded first prize, best large project, by the Australian Society for Computers in Learning in Tertiary Education.

 

A wide-ranging conference on social security law and policy sponsored by ANU's Centre for International and Public Law (CIPL) will be held on Friday, February 20. It will examine issues such as the work for the dole scheme, the introduction of the Centrelink agency, the Youth Allowance, restructure of the administrative tribunal system, and changes made to the recovery arrangements for debts.
