Parent's room offers safe childcare

Kids on Campus, the association of parents at ANU, with the assistance of the Students' Association, has opened a Parents' Room in the Union Building. The room, next to the SA office behind the Karmel Rooms, will provide a safe, comfortable environment for children of staff and students.

A Kids on Campus spokesperson said there was a proven need for the room. "The waiting lists for childcare places on campus are up to 18 months, and the cost of this since government cuts is quite high. Also, those students whose partners look after the children during a one hour lecture need a safe and comfortable environment in which to do so. Likewise, the Parents' Room is a place where school-aged children can wait for their parents to finish a lecture, again avoiding the high cost of childcare."

The room is accessible to both men and women and open to staff and students, and the non-student partners of staff and students.

A code lock on the door makes it a secure place for children.

The room contains a fridge and a microwave and toilets are located in the same corridor. There is equipment for all the needs of parents of babies and small children, including a couch, sink and change table, as well as a small supply of nappies, bibs, and cleaning equipment. A variety of toys and books is also available.
