New scholarships for Japanese students

A new scholarship scheme to assist Japanese exchange students studying at the Australian National University was announced in Kyoto last month.

The ANU Japan Exchange Scholarships are the first offered by the University for overseas students to study at ANU.

Two awards, one for an undergraduate student and one for a postgraduate student, will be made each year.

The scholarships, worth $7,500, will be available to Japanese citizens enrolled in any of the 14 Japanese universities with which ANU has an exchange agreement. The scholarships will assist Japanese students with living expenses for two consecutive semesters while they are at ANU on exchange.

One will be awarded to a Kyoto University of Foreign Studies student to mark that university's 50th anniversary in 1997.

ANU's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Deane Terrell, said the scholarships could be awarded to students from particular institutions or regions of Japan.

"The scholarships reflect the strength of Australia's relationship with Japan and ANU's commitment to furthering student exchanges," he said.

"ANU's focus on Asia in a wide range of undergraduate courses, and its outstanding research strengths provide many opportunities for Japanese students to not only advance their studies but also to experience a year studying in Australia."

The scholarship scheme was announced during a visit to Kyoto by the Director of ANU's Institute of Advanced Studies and Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sue Serjeantson.
