Evans Grawmeyer awards

The ANU's Jennifer Balint of the Research School of Social Sciences' Law program and Fiona Terry of the Peace Research Centre have been named inaugural winners of the Evans Grawmeyer Scholarships ($5,000 a year for up to three years postgraduate research). Ms Balint won the award for her work on "Genocide and law: towards a new paradigm" while Ms Fellows' award was in recognition of her work on "Internal wars and humanitarian assistance". The awards were presented by Deputy Opposition leader Gareth Evans last week.

Science academy fellows

Three ANU scientists have been elected to the Australian Academy of Science. Head of Nucear Physics Professor George Dracoulis; Dr Brendan McKay, reader in computer science; and Plant Cell Biology group senior fellow Dr Adrienne Hardham were elected at the annual meeting held in Canberra earlier this month. ANU Professor John White, Dean of the Research School of Chemistry, and Emeritus Professor Athel Beckwith were elected to the Academy's council at the same meeting.

Chilean political visitors

Four Chilean political leaders will visit the ANU next month. National Renovation Party leader Alberto Espina; Party for Democracy leader Jorge Schaulsohn; Eugenio Munizaga, Chile-Australia Parliamentary Friendship Group leader; and Christian Democratic Party national secretary Francisco Frei will hold a seminar at University House on June 16.

PARSA office holders

The Postgraduate and Research Students' Association (PARSA) has appointed new office holders for 1997/98. The new president is Catherine MacKenzie (Faculty of Law); Vice-presidents Quinton Clements (Arts), Tim Dyke (RSPhysSE); Treasurer Bernard Rolfe (FEIT); Women's Officer Elizabeth Coleman (Arts); International Students' officer Gavin Kirton (RSC); and editor of Antithesis Martin Bush.

Winning apprentice

Former ANU Faculties and Services apprentice fitter Ross Commons has moved to Mount Stromlo Observatory as an instrument maker after receiving his trade papers a year early. Mr Commons' apprenticeship was shortened following a string of medals and placings at Workskills Olympics competitions. At his most recent competition, the National Workskills Olympics Challenge in Sydney last month, Mr Commons was placed fourth, with just four points separating the top four places. Faculties and Services have been named the Master Builders' Association Host Employer of the Year for apprentice training.

Prohibition discussed

Visiting Fellow at the ANU's Law School and widely published author in the field of illegal drugs, Dr Stephen Mugford, will discuss the implications of Australia's drug laws in an evening organised by the Families and Friends for Drug Law Reform. Ogoni youth leader

General secretary of the National Youth Council of the Ogoni people of Nigeria, Komene Famaa, will discuss "Shell and the Ogoni People" on May 28 in an evening organised by ACT Greens on Campus. The venue is lecture room HA52 (near the Hayden Allen Tank). For information phone Deb Foskey 249 2638.

Immigration controls

The Research School of Social Sciences Sociology Program will hold a seminar on "A Global Logic to Immigration Controls? Canada and Australia Compared" presented by PhD scholar Brian Aboud at 2pm, seminar room D on May 29. Contact Dr Lisa Adkins 249 3305.

Australia-Japan seminar

Senate lecture

Professor Geoffrey Bolton of Edith Cowan University's Department of Social and Cultural Sciences will give the third Senate lecture on Federation entitled: "The Act of Consensus: Edmund Barton and the 1897 Australian Federal Convention".
