From the Vice-Chancellor's desk

After being recognised as one of the top 50 universities in the world  and with many milestones achieved this year, 2004 is occasion for considerable celebration at ANU.

Vice-ChancellorUniversity House has played a vital role in nurturing a spirit of collegiality and cross-disciplinary cooperation at ANU. Initiated as a residence for students and some staff, University House has evolved to become an important asset for the wider community and is a valued meeting place and hotel for many distinguished visitors. It is now 50 years since the House took in its first residents and these pages pay tribute to its unique character.

Also this year, the National Graduate School of Management celebrates its first decade, the Humanities Research Centre will celebrate its 30th Anniversary and our Observatory at Siding Spring turns 40.

Amidst this celebration of our achievements and our history, a huge range of agreements, new buildings and new collaborations are cementing an even stronger future for Australia’s national university. The ANU Medical School is playing an important role in educatinga new cohort of leaders in health. The Asia-Pacific College of Diplomacy is training diplomats from Australia and across the region, drawing on our pre-eminent strengths in Asia-Pacific studies, International Relations and Strategic and Defence Studies.

Meanwhile, the John Curtin School of Medical Research is ensuring it continues to lead Australia’s fight against disease with a new building currently underway.

The ANU campus is an exciting place to be in 2004.

Professor Ian Chubb AO
