Never before has the quality of an Australian university been so comprehensively assessed.
The quality of research output was assessed with more than 7,500 books, book chapters, papers and abstracts reviewed by 285 international and nationally-based peers, plus bibliometric and other comparative data from publicly accessible sources. The quality of ANU education was examined in detail using student surveys and independently conducted focus groups; and there was a follow-up review of the administration of the University — all in preparation for The 2004 Quality Review of ANU.
The result? ANU is placed firmly in the top 100, perhaps well within the top 50 universities in the world, based on citation rates, research success, research grants, student surveys, alumni assessment and a host of other data.
The point? The international recognition is important, but the report also presents challenges to the University: recommendations designed to make Australia’s national university even stronger.
