From the Vice-Chancellor’s desk

This month, six ANU researchers were presented with awards as ‘citation laureates’ acknowledging their outstanding work in their chosen field — more laureates than were presented to any other Australian university.

Each researcher has been ranked in the top 0.1 per cent of their speciality globally.

Adjunct Professor Jan Anderson, Emeritus Professor John Caldwell and Professors Peter Hall, Frank Jackson, Bruce Peterson and Matthew Spriggs were each recognised in these awards. ANU is proud to host these and so many other remarkable scholars.

These staff — and the others — have helped make ANU one of the world’s great universities. As you will read in this magazine, the ANU was recently ranked 49th amongst the universities of the world on the basis of its research; placed again ahead of all other Australian universities.

From the plasma thruster being developed in our physics laboratories to a new film, Morning Sun, which provides fresh insights into the complexities of China’s Cultural Revolution, ANU staff are making an important contribution to the nation and to the world.

I hope this magazine provides a taste of the achievements and commitment of all our staff.
