As you open this edition of ANU Reporter, the University will be celebrating a historic milestone. August 1 marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of ANU. Though its beginning was somewhat humble, the ideas upon which it was founded were lofty.
“The reputation of a university depends not on the number of its students or the splendour of its buildings, but on the quality of its members and the nature of its contribution to learning…” These words by the Minister for Post-War Reconstruction, Mr John Dedman, reflect the spirit in which The Australian National University was founded in 1946 and the spirit in which it continues to operate.
An interview with internationally renowned microbiologist and former head of The John Curtin School of Medical Research, Emeritus Professor Frank Fenner, who was part of the University when it was little more than a small collection of wooden buildings and big ideas, will give you an insight into the journey ANU has taken.
Rising to the challenge, ANU has long played an active role in discussions of national and international importance. Recently the University has cemented its place on the world stage as a member of the International Alliance of Research Universities.
Although still relatively young, the University has achieved much since its establishment and has confirmed its place as a centre for academic excellence.
Looking ahead to our next 60 years, the University is committed to continuing the spirit in which it was founded, contributing to the economic, social, cultural and scientific development of Australia.
