Part One – Operation of agreement

9.   Freedom of Association Principles

9.1  With respect to Freedom of Association the University will observe the principles in this clause. 

9.2  The University will not encourage nor discourage union membership, nor will it use CGS funds to pay union staff salaries, fund union facilities or activities.

9.3  The University recognises a staff member’s right to be or not to be a member of and be represented by a union; and to participate in union or staff representative activities.

9.4  Where reference is made to the right of any staff member to choose to be represented or accompanied in any discussion or other matter under this Agreement, this will not include a barrister or solicitor, except in relation to actual proceedings initiated in a Court.

9.5  The University recognises the important contribution that staff representatives make to employment relations within the University. Training and support will be provided to those staff who fulfil this role, and they will be given adequate time away from their normal role/s to act as a staff representative.
