ANU Relocation Guide

Immigration

Department of Immigration & Citizenship (DIAC)

Temporary Residency

If you are offered a temporary position, the University will sponsor you for a Long Stay Temporary Business Visa, Subclass 457, for up to four years.  You can lodge your (online) visa application after you have received notification that the sponsorship has been approved by DIAC.

Health Insurance

If the University sponsors you for temporary employment, it is a condition that you hold private health insurance, and that you provide evidence (details of membership) of this insurance, which should cover you and your dependants for the term of your contract of employment. The cost of this insurance is your responsibility.  Travel insurance does not provide sufficient cover for these purposes.

1. For visa applications made prior to 1 November 2005, the University requires you (and your family if you are accompanied) to have health insurance to cover all medical and hospital expenses for the full term of your employment.

2. For visa applications made on or after 1 November 2005, the University requires you (and your family if you are accompanied) to have health insurance to cover all medical or hospital expenses arising from treatment administered in a public hospital (other than expenses that are met by your reciprocal health care arrangements), for the full term of your employment. Anything over and above this level of medical insurance cover is a personal choice, and any medical expenses incurred over and above your level of medical insurance, are your responsibility.

Permanent Residency

If you are offered an ongoing position, the University will commence the Temporary Residency sponsorship process initially, to enable you to enter Australia and take up your position with the University, as quickly as possible.

Once you have arrived the University can sponsor you for Permanent Residency under the Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) or the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS) .  You can lodge your (online) visa application after you have received notification that the sponsorship has been approved by DIAC.

Health Insurance

When your Permanent Residency visa is granted you will become eligible for Australia’s national health scheme, Medicare.
