Occupational Health and Safety Statistics

1988 - 2004

A uniform injury/exposure reporting system was introduced to The Australian National University in 1988. The initial paper-based process was replaced by the current web-based reporting in 2001.  As well as acting as the "Notice Of Injury" form for workers' compensation purposes, the reporting system is used to generate the following OHS statistics.

A.     Number of work and employment injuries
B.     Number of more severe work and employment injuries (5+ days)
C.     Incidence of work and employment injuries by OHS category
D.     Incidence of more severe work and employment injuries by OHS category (5+ days)
E.    Work injuries by Budget Centre

In Australia, a work injury is recorded in terms of the incapacity to perform work for one or more successive working days. The work injury incidence is reported as number of work injuries per 100 equivalent full-time employees per year.

The ANU has performed well in terms of this measure in during the current reporting year, maintaining a trend established over previous years.

Work injury data from the Australian workforce is collected by the National Occupational Health and Safety Commission and is available at http://www.nohsc.gov.au/Statistics/publications/#compendium

2003-04 3387 451 404 47

The major injury agents for the 23 lost-time injuries were acute kinetic events (slips/trips/falls = 2; sprain/strain = 3; manual handling = 3 ) and chronic occupational strains = 6.

These injury agents from the previous year were acute kinetic events (slips/trips/falls = 2; sprain/strain = 3; manual handling = 3) and chronic occupational strains = 6.

Note the wide variation in the number of commuting injuries from year to year. The 95% confidence interval for a Poisson distribution with an average of 13 random events is 7-22 events.

The major injury agents for the 7 lost-time 5+ days for 2003-04 were acute events (strains = 1 , manual handling = 1 , cuts = 0 , falls = 1) and occupational disease events (chronic occupational strains = 3, stress = 0).

These injury agents from the previous year were acute events (strains = 1, manual handling = 1, cuts = 0, falls = 1) and occupational disease events (chronic occupational strains = 3, stress = 0).
