The unique structure of ANU makes it the most research-intensive university in Australia. The University’s seven Colleges combine research with research-led teaching, while the Institute of Advanced Studies is dedicated to research and research training.
Ten research schools form the Institute of Advanced Studies. The University also has a range of specialised schools and centres within the Colleges. Additionally, the National Centre for Indigenous Studies works collaboratively with the main research and teaching areas of relevance to Indigenous Australians across the University.
The University is governed by a 15 member Council which, subject to the Australian National University Act 1991 and the Statutes, has the entire control and management of the University. The Council is to act in all matters concerning the University in the way it thinks will best promote the interests of the University. The powers of the Council include, but are not limited to, the power to appoint persons (whether members of the staff of the University or not) to positions of responsibility within the University.
