Schooling for children

Your Child’s Schooling
According to the law, all school aged-aged children in Australia, regardless of residential status (that is, temporary or permanent), must enrol at the appropriate school level. Non-Australian permanent residents may have to pay tuition fees for their child’s compulsory schooling.
You are exempt from paying tuition fees for your school-aged child only if you are in th efollowing category:
- An Australian Government scholarship holder (for example, AusAID, OPRS, IPRS)
- An ANU Tuition Fee Scholarship holder;
- A refugeee
- An Exchange student; or
- A foreign diplomat
To check your eligibility for a fee waiver please read the ACT Department of Education's charging policy.
If you belong to one of the above exemption categories, you must produce clear proof of your how you are exempt to the ACT Department of Education and Training when applying for your child’s enrolment. You can request a letter stating these details at the IEO.
