Guidelines for Homestay Legal Guardians

GUIDELINES FOR HOMESTAY PROVIDERS

These guidelines have been slightly adapted from those of ANUCollege.  ANU College is the Australian National University's provider of homestay and guardianships arrangements.

Purpose of Guidelines

These Guidelines are issued for the assistance of both Homestay Students and Homestay Providers.

If you have any queries or concerns about the Homestay program, please contact:

Role of ANU College

ANU College arranges the placement of the student with the Homestay Provider.  ANU College is NOT responsible for the payment of board to the host. The Host has the normal duty of care for anybody in their house.

Medical Cover and Welfare

ANU Overseas Student Health Cover will be arranged for the student prior to arrival.

Routine problems or minor welfare matters which concern either the student or the host should be raised with the

Manager, International Student Services

Ms Ann Bell, phone: 6125 0679

In order for a Legal Guardian to speak frankly with the Manager the homestay student is  required to submit the "Permission to Release Information" form directly to the Manager.

Level of Provision

It is expected that students will be provided with board including breakfast, a cut lunch and the evening meal on week days and full board on weekends. This could involve a cut lunch for trips. It is also expected that each student will have a room of their own and that the Homestay Provider will provide a change of bed linen and towels. It is also expected that washing and ironing will be provided, although any move by the Student to take some responsibility for this should not be discouraged.

Homestay Providers are not expected to transport the Students, although it is expected that they will assist them to become familiar with Public Transport in the first week.

Use of the telephone is as decided by the Homestay Provider, but a record should be kept, especially of overseas and mobile calls, for which the student must pay separately.

Religious Beliefs and Practices

These should be respected, particularly those related to food.

Language in the Home

As far as possible the language used with the Students should be English.

Behaviour in the Home

It is expected that the Students will comply with the standards of your home, especially with respect to smoking or alcohol. Hosts can reasonably expect students to participate in some household chores, such as clearing the table, and keeping their room tidy.  Our Homestay Providers are asked to make life for the students as comfortable as possible, particularly with respect to them needing quiet study time on a regular basis.

Weekly Rate & Notice for Departure

The rate for Full Board is $220.00 per week. This will be paid by the Student direct to the Homestay Provider if the student is an individual one.  We recommend that board payments should be made in advance for the first 4 weeks on arrival then each two weeks thereafter.  Students who leave their Homestay accommodation in the first 4 weeks will forfeit any remaining money paid for that period.

Students and Homestay Providers must give either party TWO (2) WEEKS notice if either party has a need to cancel the arrangement. The Homestay accommodation rates must apply in full when students go away during their holiday breaks.  No discounts and no negotiations are to be entered into.

Guardianship

Guardianship is necessary for students under 18 years of age.  The guardian will need to have a police check with the results being given to the Homestay officer at ANU College and to  the ANU administration. An additional amount of $20.00 per week is added to the cost of Homestay accommodation.

ANU College reserves the right to withdraw a student from Homestay if necessary.
