What's New?
The University of Copenhagen is organising the scientific congress on Climate Change in cooperation with the partners in the International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU). For more information, please visit http://climatecongress.ku.dk
What is the IARU?
The IARU is an alliance of ten of the world's leading research universities - ANU, ETH Zürich, National University of Singapore, Peking University, University of California, Berkeley, University of Cambridge, University of Copenhagen, University of Oxford, University of Tokyo and Yale University.
It is a strategic drawing together of universities that share a similar vision and have a commitment to educating future leaders.
ANU Vice-Chancellor Professor Ian Chubb AC has been elected as chairman for the period inclusive 2006 - 2009. For this period, the ANU will be performing the role of IARU secretariat.
For further information about the Alliance, please refer to the IARU website.
IARU Activities
The Alliance will encourage and support:
In the longer term, we plan to seek corporate / foundation / government support for research projects; perhaps convene a forum to share knowledge about the commercialisation of research and the legal and academic framework in each country; work jointly on benchmarking; and develop shared positions on key public policy issues.
Further information about IARU activities is available from the IARU website.
IARU Principles
IARU Members have agreed that the alliance should operate in accord with the following principles:
- That the Alliance will be strategic – drawing together research-intensive universities that share similar values including those of academic diversity, international collaboration and commitment to educating future world leaders;
- That opportunities will be created for the further development of students and staff alike;
- That the Alliance will offer the opportunity for substantially deeper and more wide-ranging associations than usual international university consortia or groupings;
- That the Alliance will bring a new dimension to Members’ international activities, including new opportunities for international research, teaching and learning;
- The Alliance will not be representative in nature (not every region in the world will necessarily be included);
- That the Alliance will (in the medium term) invite participants to utilise the complementary research capability of Members to address issues of central importance;
- That the Alliance will provide a framework within which a range of protocols and templates can be developed to promote collaboration and allow cooperative activities to be undertaken more easily;
- That each Member will determine the extent of its involvement in each of the activities of the Alliance to suit its particular objectives and constraints;
- That Alliance activities will build on and strengthen existing relationships;
- That members will give prominence to the Alliance in order to allow and encourage multilateral and bilateral cooperation between Members; and
- That Membership of the Alliance will in no way preclude or limit activities with partners outside the Alliance.
