Education Portfolio

The primary educational objective of ANU is to become the university of choice for talented students locally, nationally and internationally by offering a unique range of research-led degree programs.

Our educational approach is to actively and systematically build on the University's research excellence within its undergraduate curriculum. Inspired by the work of the Boyer Commission (1998), ANU has undertaken to integrate its research capacities into its teaching. The resulting approach, called Enquiry Learning, provides an exciting research-led approach to teaching and learning, appropriate to a University eminent in research.

Benefits of an ANU education

As a result of their educational experiences at ANU students will:

  • develop an understanding of the current state of a specific area of knowledge, as well as an awareness of the ever-changing and provisional nature of this knowledge (depth of knowledge)
  • form broad conceptual frameworks within which disciplinary knowledge can be developed (breadth of knowledge)
  • develop skills to communicate in oral and written form to disseminate information, critique argument and persuade (communication skills)
  • learn to work with others and value diverse backgrounds, opinions and views as a resource for enhancing outcomes (team working skills)
  • develop skills to enable research, analysis and solution of complex problems (problem solving skills)
  • discover how knowledge and understanding evolves and is subject to challenge and revision (understanding of enquiry-based knowledge development)
  • develop an informed and critical questioning of accepted theories and views (critical thinking)
  • be prepared for whatever may lie beyond graduation: graduate school, professional school, or a professional position and for being a well-informed and contributing citizen (lifelong learning skills).
