A touch of ancient Rome has come to the Law School with the completion of an outdoor amphitheatre.
The new shaded seating will be used by staff and students for classes and as a retreat from the harried pace of work indoors.
The Vice-Chancellor Professor Ian Chubb recently opened the tiered seating at a gala event, which included a performance from a Latin band.
Professor Chubb said the refurbished courtyard was in keeping with the remainder of the University grounds.
“It brings it into line with the rest of the campus,” he said. “I’ve received many compliments on this development. It’s a credit to you and it’s a credit to us all.”
The Dean of Law Professor Michael Coper said the amphitheatre, which he designed, is already proving popular for a range of uses.
“People are already giving some classes outside. Of course, it will also be of great value for recreation. It’s in a beautiful position in a shaded spot. It’s very simple, but very effective.”
What's in a name?
At ANU this month:
• ANUTECH Court has been renamed the Fulton Muir Building to honour University Council member and finance committee chair Fulton Muir.
• The John Curtin School of Medical Research revealed the name of Xchange Place, an integral part of its new building.
