Language learners lauded by Ambassador

Swiss Ambassador Christian Mühlethaler (front, left) and Professor Ian Chubb (front, right) congratulate the winners of the Swiss Essay Competiton (front-back, left-right) Gráinne O’Brien, Caroline Haywood, Jennifer Bauer, Belle Jospeh, Elizabeth Hall, Elizabeth Mullan, Kaitlin Yuille, and Jai Sharma (absent: Daniel Purcell).

Swiss Ambassador to Australia Christian Mühlethaler recently lauded language students when he named the winners of the Swiss Essay Competition, run annually by the School of Language Studies in the Faculty of Arts.

Students were asked to write a essay in French, German, or Italian, with the best three in each language sharing in $1800 provided by the Swiss government and the University.

Speaking to a small gathering at the Swiss embassy, the ambassador said that unlike Switzerland, Australia had the advantage of having a common language nationwide.

“This makes me regard even higher the efforts of students here to study other languages. I think this is crucial,” he said.

“It will provide you with an edge in your development and careers.”
