Opportunities for the University’s experts to develop regional and global health strategies will increase as part of a new national alliance.
The National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health (NCEPH) is a founding member of the Australian Coalition for Global Health Research.
NCEPH Director Professor Tony McMichael said the coalition will facilitate collaborative research and access to funding support for researchers, with a focus on population health issues in low and middle-income countries.
He also said it would allow NCEPH to extend its existing research work in the area, providing more opportunities for staff to develop collaborations with other agencies.
“We are a national centre; we have a responsibility to think about possible health issues on a large scale, and to achieve the appropriate national engagement in regional and global public health issues,” he said.
Australia’s Chief Medical Officer Dr John Horvath launched the coalition after a two-day workshop at University House.
