Oldest fossils dated
The oldest human fossils are 195,000 years old, about 40,000 years older than the existing oldest known remains of modern humans, according to ANU geochronologist, Professor Ian McDougall. The fossilised skulls, recovered in southern Ethiopia, are the oldest known remains of modern humans — they were found in 1967 but not precisely dated until Professor McDougall and colleagues from University of Utah and Stony Brook University in the US announced their findings in science journal Nature.
RSAA among world’s best
Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics staff are among the most cited in their field in the world, with 23 papers appearing in a list of the 1000 most-cited astrophysics papers, including three in the top 100. Fourteen papers by Mt Stromlo alumni were also on the list.
Wanderer wins Fellowship
Writer and documentary maker Ms Robyn Davidson, who in 1997 made a nine-month solo desert journey by camel across Australia, is the first of two 2005 H.C. Coombs Fellows. This year the Fellowship will be divided between two writers — Ms Davidson in Semester 1 and Mr Michael McGirr in Semester 2.
Bavarians honour chemist
Emeritus Professor Martin Bennett from the Research School of Chemistry has been elected to the prestigious Bavarian Academy of Sciences as a corresponding member.
Friends in physics
Shaun Howard has joined the PhD program in physics in the Department of Applied Mathematics thanks to an American Australian Association Sir Keith Murdoch Fellowship.
